Childrens chores are a tricky subject these days. Do you put your children to work or do it all for them just because you can do it better and faster. There are benefits to having children do chores. Here are 3 benefits of childrens chores that may change your perspective.
1. Chores together builds the spirit of “family”
My wife has started letting our daughter, who is 7 years old, help with the preparation of meals. The other day my daughter prepared our evening dinner, Loaded Baked Potato Soup and Cheddar Bay Biscuits. It was delicious and she felt so proud of her accomplishment.
These aren’t just chores we’re talking about! This is life itself.”
We have two kids that are great at wanting to help, sometimes when there is nothing that they can help with. Instead of ignoring those pleas to be useful with chores, we reward them by including them in the task at hand. I have found my self looking around the house as I am traveling from one room to another seeing if there is any childrens chores that they can do. That way, when they come to me with that enthusiastic attitude of help, I reward them with that chore item.
Now remember, letting your kids do chores means that sometimes they will not do them to your standards. Don’t let yourself get to upset, which you probably could, but instead praise them for the effort and show them how they can do it better. Practice makes perfect, Right. The key to succeeding is working along side them. This leads me into the next benefit of childrens chores, a good work ethic.
2. Chores teaches them good work ethic
This time, resolve to succeed. The place to start is with our own thinking. Housework is an inevitable part of life. Just as we prepare our children for their adult lives by sending them to school, so we need to prepare them to manage and maintain a home. Housework is an integral part of life for everyone, man, woman, and child. In today’s busy families, there’s no excuse for anybody to shirk their portion of the necessary work.(Clipped from Kids and Chores: Chilling The Chore Wars | Organized Home)
My son is 5 years old and has a habit of being destructive of property. One such time he decided while in “Time-out” to take a crayon he found in a basket on the stairs where he was and scribble all over the wall. We were not impressed to say the least, but we did make him take a Magic Eraser and clean his mistake. We should never be afraid of giving our children chores to do around the house, they live there too. Childrens chores teaches them the value of property. Just look around your city and neighborhoods at the destruction of property. Is this what we want for the future of our children. Instilling a good work ethic will go with them through school, college and when they are finally out on their own. As parents, we want to give them all of the tools to succeed in life, chores are no different.
Now last but definitely not the least, the final benefit of childrens chores.
3. Chores gets the work done so there’s more time for fun!
In today’s economy, it’s not uncommon for both parents to be working just to make enough money for a decent living. So with both parents working, chores tend to go undone or put off till they have to be done. Like no more clothes to wear because the laundry hasn’t been done yet. This is the benefit of childrens chores. They share the responsibility with you, chores gets done in less time which leads to more free time for fun stuff. Who wouldn’t want more time for doing fun stuff? Right!
So let’s do childrens chores together to build the spirit of the family, teach them that great work ethic to carry them through life’s many trials, and best of all, let’s have fun with all that extra time.
Focus on the Family has a great post on age appropriate childrens chores.
